Embryo Transfer Instructions: What to Expect

Preparation for the embryo transfer:
- Ensure you have a full bladder for the procedure. Start drinking at least 30 minutes before your arrival time; approximately 1L of water is recommended.
- There are no food restrictions, so breakfast is allowed.
- Arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled procedure and check-in.
Embryo transfer:
- Upon arrival, a Pollin Toronto Nurse will take you to a private transfer room, provide a gown, and ask you to undress from the waist down.
- You may be offered Ativan to relax before the transfer. If taken, arrange for someone to pick you up as you won't be able to drive.
- A sonographer will check your bladder position before the transfer begins. Based on the scan, you may need to fill or empty your bladder.
- The Embryo Transfer takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
- A Pollin Toronto embryologist will bring the embryo (s) into the room in an isolette.
- You will be able to see the embryo on a screen, confirm your name, and have the nurse take a picture if requested.
- The doctor will insert a speculum, cleanse the cervix, and gently insert the embryos into the uterus through a catheter. Some cramping may occur.
- The catheter is checked under a microscope to ensure proper embryo transfer.
After the embryo transfer:
- Relax in the transfer room for ~ 30 minutes.
- You may empty your bladder following your transfer.
- No restrictions on eating or drinking. Relax for the rest of the day.
- Continue taking all medications as directed, Never stop a medication before contacting a member of your care team.
- A pregnancy test is typically scheduled 9 days after the transfer and your primary care nurse will provide you with the next steps then.
