What is Intralipid?
Intralipid is a fat emulsion used as an intravenous nutritional supplement. In fertility treatments, it's used to improve the chances of embryo implantation and pregnancy.
How Does Intralipid Work?
- Immune System Modulation: Intralipid helps regulate your immune system. This can be beneficial for patients who have elevated natural killer (NK) cell activity, which can hinder embryo implantation.
- Nutritional Support: Provides essential fatty acids, which are important for cellular functions and overall health.
Administration Process
- Cost: $150 per infusion
- Preparation: Intralipid is administered through an intravenous (IV) infusion.
- Duration: The infusion typically takes about 2 hours.
- Frequency: 3 doses will be given
- 1st dose: booked 1-7 days prior to your transfer
- 2nd dose: about 1 week after your positive pregnancy test
- 3rd dose: around your 7 week OB ultrasound scan
Potential Side Effects
Most patients tolerate Intralipid well, but some may experience side effects. Common side effects include:
- Mild Reactions: Headache, dizziness, fever, or chills.
- Injection Site Reactions: Pain, redness, or swelling at the infusion site.
- Allergic Reactions: Although rare, some patients may experience allergic reactions. Symptoms include rash, itching, or difficulty breathing. Notify your healthcare provider immediately if you experience these symptoms.
Please bring your laptop, a book or something to keep you busy for the 2 hours! We will give you some food and drinks while you have the infusion. Please wear a shirt that easily rolls up or gives us access to your elbow for the IV.
We are here to support you every step of the way.
Best of luck with your treatment!
