Prolactin Handout
October 30, 2023
You have been provided with this handout as your prolactin blood test result has come back above the normal ranges.
What is the normal result for prolactin?
The normal result for prolactin is less than 25.
What can affect my prolactin level?
Your elevated prolactin level can be affected by:
- Breast stimulation
- Exercise
- Stress
- Some medications, such as antipsychotic medications
- Pregnancy
Do I need to repeat my prolactin test?
You will need to repeat your prolactin blood test while fasting. Fasting means no food or drink after midnight. We encourage you to complete this testing first thing in the morning. Upon completion of your blood test, you may eat and drink as normal.
If your repeat prolactin result is between >25 to <80
- Your physician may order a medication called Bromocriptine to help lower your prolactin level to the normal range.
- A prescription will be created for Bromocriptine 2.5 mg, taken orally once a day at bedtime x 4 weeks. This prescription will be faxed to your pharmacy on file.
Are there any side effects while taking Bromocriptine?
You may experience dizziness or stomach upset, which is why you should take it at bedtime and with food, so that it reduces those side effects. As you continue to take Bromocriptine, the side effects will eventually stop.
What if my prolactin result is >80?
If your initial prolactin is >80, you will repeat a fasting prolactin blood test.
If your second prolactin continues to be >80, your Primary Care team will provide you with an MRI requisition to complete at an external lab. There will be questions on this requisition that you will need to answer.
Can I continue with my treatment plan?
Please note you will not be proceeding with any treatment plan until your prolactin level is controlled.
Do I need to repeat my prolactin test while on my medication?
While taking Bromocriptine, you will be booked to come into the clinic about 3 weeks later for a repeat prolactin blood test to ensure the dose is appropriate for you.
- If your level is >25, your Primary Care Team will provide specific instructions on your next steps.
- If your level is less than 25 and you are feeling well, we will increase your prescription to a 4 month supply with no refills. You may resume treatment and report your next day 1 of your period to your Patient App to initiate your next treatment plan.
When do I stop taking Bromocriptine?
Please do not stop taking Bromocriptine unless advised by your Primary Care team. You will discontinue Bromocriptine use upon pregnancy.
